How does the associated gated process percent complete method work?

The associated gated process percent complete is only applicable to gated project object types. Using this method, administrators are able to define a percent complete value for each gate in a gated process.

  • Pros: The associated gated process percent complete method provides a consistent percent complete value for gated projects that share the same process and removes variation or opinion from the calculation.
  • Cons: Depending on the length of the gate, a project can stay at the same percent complete for a long amount of time, which may be discouraging to team members.

This article describes how the associated gated process percent complete method works.

1. Click Processes

Click Processes
  1. On the Icon Bar, click the Admin button, then click Configuration to expand the menu.
  2. Click Processes.

2. View Processes

  • This list displays all of the processes that have been created to support the gated projects in your environment. For some of them, there is a percentage next to the gate names. This indicates that when the gate is completed, you will achieve that specific percentage. For example, for the Major Project process above, the Scoping gate has a 5% complete associated with it. For that reason, when the user completes the Scoping gate and moves to the Acceptance gate, the percent complete for the project will increase to 5%. Likewise, when the user completes the Acceptance gate and moves to the Execute gate, the percent complete for the project will increase to 20%.

3. Click Advance

  1. On the Summary page for this major project, the Status is On Track in the Scoping gate; therefore, the % Complete has defaulted to 1%.
  2. Click Advance to move to the Acceptance gate.

4. Advance Gate

Advance Gate
  1.    Enter a comment in the dialog box (optional).
  2.    Click Advance.

5. View Percent Complete

  1. The % Complete has updated to 5% because the process that is associated with this project template says that when the Scoping gate is completed, the % Complete will be that percentage.
  2. Click Advance.

Note: The % Complete value may not change immediately when a gate is completed because this is controlled by an agent. The Project % Complete task under the Status Change agent runs in the background to update the percent complete value of gated projects to match the percentage described in the process. See the article How does the Project % Complete Agent task work? for information about the configuration of this task.

6. Advance Gate

  2.    Click Advance.

7. View Percent Complete

  • The % Complete value has updated to 20% to match the selected process.

The Project % Complete task under the Status Change agent runs in the background to update the percent complete value of gated projects to match the percentage described in the process.
