How are duration, effort, and % allocation calculated?
There are three numbers associated with demand: duration, effort (hours), and % allocation. These three numbers work together; one of the three is always calculated from the other two. The calculation for duration, effort, and % allocation is:
- Duration x % Allocation = Effort
In order to see how these values are working together in PowerSteering, the Duration, Effort, and % Allocation columns must all be displayed on your Project Central Layout. This article describes how duration, effort, and % allocation are calculated.
See the article How do I use the bulk edit feature to change the calculated field? for information about changing which of these is your calculated field.
Note: Duration, effort, and % allocation behave differently when effort is changed using Variable Allocation. Please see the article What are my Project Central display options? for more information.
1. Click Resource Planning
2. View Calculated Field
- When the Duration, Effort, and % Allocation columns are all visible on a Project Central layout, you can easily determine which is your calculated field. A yellow underline will appear under the calculated value and users can hover over the underlined value to view calculation information. The calculated field can be edited by typing a new value in the field; however, this will change the calculated field to a different field following this order: Duration --> Effort --> % Allocation --> Duration. For example, if % Allocation is your calculated field, and you manually enter a value for that field, Duration will become your calculated field and the Effort value will be updated accordingly.
Note: By default, the % Allocation field is the calculated field for work created using the Create New page. For work that is added to Project Central using the Add Under option, Effort is the default calculated field.
3. Duration
- Duration is calculated by dividing the effort of the item by the % allocation. In the example above, for Task 1, the effort is 42 hours and the % allocation is 75%, so PowerSteering updates the Duration to 7 days (56 hours) since it is the calculated field.
Note: The maximum work duration allowed by PowerSteering is 10,000 days.
