What are my Project Central display options?

Project Central has several options that allow you to control what is displayed on the page. This article describes the available display options and how to select or clear them to be displayed.

1. The Display Menu

The Display Menu

The Display menu has a set of check boxes that control what is displayed on the screen. You need to select or clear the check box to the left of the  option to add or remove it from the display. Selecting an option could alter other selections. For example you cannot have the Gantt and Variable Allocation selected together. If you select the Variable Allocation check box, the check box for the Gantt and Critical Path will automatically be cleared for you.

Same thing applies to the Resource List and Supply/demand chart. Only one of these options can be displayed at a time.

The remaining display options such as Document deliverables, Text messages and others can be displayed at any time and in any combination.

2. Gantt Chart

  • On the Display menu, select the Gantt check box.

Gantt: The Gantt chart is commonly used in project management to show activities against a time scale. Each activity is represented by a bar; the position and length of the bar reflects the start date, duration and end date of the activity. This allows you to see at a glance what the various activities are, when each activity begins and ends, how long each activity is scheduled to last, where activities overlap with other activities, and by how much, and then the start and end date of the whole project.

3. Variable Allocation

  • Click Display, select the Variable Allocation check box.

Variable Allocation: This option will replace the Gantt chart with a table of editable cells that represent the number of hours for a particular activity. Unless the individual number in a period is edited, the numbers are calculated based on the effort and % allocation defined for the duration of the activity. You can use this view to manually adjust how the whole allocation is broken down across the life of the work item.

Note: Effort, Duration, and % Allocation will behave in the following manner when Effort is changed using Variable Allocation:

  • Calculated Field = Duration: Effort and % Allocation will change. Duration will remain the calculated field and will not change.
  • Calculated Field = Effort: Effort and % Allocation will change. Effort will remain the calculated field.
  • Calculated Field = % Allocation:  Effort and % Allocation will change. Allocation will remain the calculated field.

4. Critical Path

  • Click Display, select the Critical Path check box.

Critical Path: This option adds a red line in the Gantt that represents the critical path of a project. Any work item that is on the critical path is one whose scheduling directly impacts the end date of the master work item.

Note: There is an option to display a Critical Path column that results in a Yes or No designation for a particular work item indicating if it is or is not on the critical path of the project.

5. Resource List

  • Click Display, select the Resource list check box.

Resource list: This option will display what is known as the Team Panel. The Team Panel displays a list of anyone that is a contributor to the project, their role on the project, and their allocation and availability for the visible time period.

Note: The effort that is displayed is specific to the selected project and activity. The availability that is displayed is specific to the user and their overall availability in PowerSteering.

6. Supply/Demand Chart

  • Click Display, select the Supply/demand chart check box.

Supply/demand chart: This chart illustrates availability by role. The chart displays the difference between the supply (hours that resources have available for work) and demand (the staffed and unstaffed allocations). If supply is positive for a role (there is sufficient resource availability to cover the defined work) there will be a colored segment for the role above zero. If supply is negative in a role (there is less resource availability than there is effort required for defined work) the colored segment will be below zero.

The size of the colored segment represents the magnitude of the positive or negative availability. Hover over the segment to see the exact figure, in hours. The entire bar (the sum of all colored segments in a bar) tells the overall story. If the bar is larger above zero than below, there is generally availability, but the roles under zero are over-capacity. If the bar is larger below zero, there is generally insufficient availability, but some roles (those with segments above zero) have some availability.

7. Document Deliverables

  • Click Display, select the Document deliverables check box.

Document deliverables: If you have documents associated with your project plan, selecting this option will display those work items under their assigned phase.

8. Text Messages

  • Click Display, select the Text messages check box.

Text messages: Text messages are instructional text items that do not affect your project schedule. If you have text message deliverables within your project, selecting this option will display those deliverables under their assigned phase.

Note: Text messages cannot be added as a deliverable in Project Central. To do this, use the Add Deliverables function on the Summary page.

9. Folders

  • Click Display, select the Folders check box.

Folders: If you have folders associated with your project plan, selecting this option will display those work items under their assigned phase.

10. Action Items

  • Click Display, select the Action Items check box.

Action Items: If you have added action items to your project plan, selecting this option will display those work items under their assigned phase.

11. Date Change Information Popups

  • Click Display, select the Date change information popups check box.

Date change information popups: When you modify a date within your project schedule you will see a dialog box appear similar to the one in the preceding screen shot if you have selected this display option. Assuming you are using automatic scheduling, there are generally 3 choices presented that will either change the constraint type of the activity, change the status of the work item or allow you to change the scheduling of that work item from automatic to manual.

You can click the Details link to read more about each of the options presented.

Selecting the Do not display these options again check box will do the same thing as clearing the check box from the Display menu.
